The Delays

Time goes by so quickly. EXCUSE #1

When we started the build my son Aaron was just 14, and he has been my primary build assistant for the Rocket.

However, the build is just one part of getting his familiarisation with cars and driving.

Throughout 2008 he has been driving virtually every weekend from the end of March till the end of November. Amongst his driving exploits he has attended the Bill Gwynne Rally School, the off-road driving at the Whitecliff 4x4 off road driving centre, and has driven a whole raft of cars, trucks, lorries, and even a bus during Under 17 Car Club driving events. All this takes away a lot of spare time for building Molly.

Time goes by so quickly. EXCUSE #2

I had a heart attack a while back and health has not been good. I ended up focussing all my efforts into getting better, which meant that Molly got neglected at a second level. At one stage I thought I might end up selling her, but things are getting better, and behind the scenes we have made progress, and our target is to get her to Stoneleigh in May.

During the delays, we have been enviously watching how Adrian Bennett's MEV Rocket build has been coming on.

As we have said elsewhere, we are still excited by the build even if some things have proved to not be quite so straightforward as anticipated, and the delays in the build in no way reflect any problems with the product that Stuart Mills at MEV produces. Despite our delays, Aaron and myself remain firmly committed to the build.

The fact that my son can take part in these types of events just seems amazing, and his level of car control stuns me. Maybe one day we will get a rally car and he can drive and I will co-drive.

Driving

Mum & Aaron collecting Aygo    Aaron about to drive Aygo for 1st time

Molly will never be Aaron's 1st car as it would cost the country's GDP to insure him. But we have been thinking that buying a £400ish first car at 17 needing loads of upkeep and never being sure of what such vehicles have been previously subjected to, is not such a great idea.
So we put our heads together and came up with the idea that we should invest in a Toyota Aygo for his U17CC driving. 30+ weekends in 2009 would set him well on his way to preparing him for his driving test in 2010. Learning to look after a car, keeping it in good condition, rather than a pigsty on wheels might help him learn about responsibility.
Lavish it might be, but he has given up every birthday and Christmas present until 2020.

Just as well mum is understanding and willing to have 3 cars on the drive and Molly in the garage.

Things We Struggled with

SEATS

Not using MEV's own seats, but buying Rally Design competition seats has posed some fitting problems have been resolved.

Getting engine LEVEl

When the engine was dropped into chassis it sat at an angle. Packers were needed to level things off in engine bay.

RAD COOLING FAN

The small Focus rad fan is rarer that rocking horse manure at breaker yards. So we need to find an affordable alternative.
