Meet MOLLY

From a wish to reality. The build begins

Molly waiting to be taken homeDelayed by traffic on the day and taking into account the fact that I was helping move my step-daughter and her family into her new home in Grantham on the day of the collection of the kit from MEV in Mansfield, it was very late on December 12th when I arrived in the MEV car park.

Stuart Mills had offered to stay late so I could collect the kit with my car and trailer.

I did not get time to take many pictures, but the chassis is pictured left in the MEV workshops.

Stuart always puts you at ease with everything, and soon we had all the bits in the trailer and in the back of my Seat Leon, allowing me to chug down the M1 in the "Going Home" traffic.

Everything was transferred to the garage in double quick time, and all of a sudden the reality of what we were embarking upon struck me.

Molly at homeWith new and donor parts stored all around the house, the arrival of the chassis late in the evening Dec12th marked a the passing of one of our project milestones.

With Molly (yes she has a name) safely installed in the now pretty much empty garage, it was time to bring together the bulk of her component parts for her first photo shoot.

It was a bit like Santa arrived early for Christmas with all of the parts, including my son posing on the drive.

Within 10 minutes, the wife of one of my neighbours came by and said "don't let my husband see that, he use to have a Caterham, BUT HE HAD TO GET RID OF IT".

Yes, you guessed. Ten minutes later he was down having a look and offering to help build Molly. Do you know, when his wife went away he said, " She made me get rid of my Caterham years ago". Can you believe that folks.

Anyway, molly is living in the garage, where we are bringing her to life. Updates on progress soon.

Me

The RocketI am a tired old sod, who recently had a heart attack, and as a result got a bit involved in the meaning of life. I road and stage rallied for years before getting involved with selling bits for race cars. I left the motorsport industry in 1995 and have hankered after building a kit car for years.

With other associate members of the Under 17 Car Club (parents of members), undertaking the build of race cars and road going Caterhams, I thought it was time for me to have a go.

Hence the MEV Rocket, which I also love.

My assistant

The GalleryAaron is 14 and has been driving with the Under 17 Car Club for 2 years.

He is currently a Grade 2 member working towards Grade 1 when he will be able to drive unaccompanied at club event venues.

He is a very good driver, and one of the reasons we bought Molly, is to help him understand the complexities of a car and to get use to working on the mechanical upkeep of a car.

He loves the MEV Rocket, and is looking forward to driving her soon.

Consider this

FACT

You can get a huge amount of a car's components into you roof, without it falling onto you bed whilst you sleep.

FACT

Children can keep secrets so long as you bribe them often and at the right level for their age and associated needs.

FACT

Not every wife will divorce you for wanting to build and drive a kit car.
Well maybe not a fact, just a hope.
